The needs of computerized physician order entry

The function that CPOE process is assigned is to deal with mimicking the prescription of drugs or other medical instructions on paper. The process is actually an electronic method of entering medical instructions designed in order to improve the overall efficiency of workflow and reduce clinical errors related to wrong prescription of drugs and treatments. The process is instantaneous i.e. the communiqué is transferred directly via a computer network which is accessible to the hospital staff as soon as it is recorded so that appropriate action is taken immediately.

Computerized physician order entry systems have proven themselves in minimizing medication errors arising out of illegible handwritings which might be mistaken for something else and thus results in wrong administration of drugs. Studies conducted have brought into light the advantages of such system as they have shown that their implementation results in reduced deaths due to wrong medication which ultimately improves the mortality rate record of a healthcare facility.
